Beginnings
The history of the Paste Floor, Mexican Floor, Handmade Paste Mosaic, Handmade Hydraulic Floor or Handmade Paste Mosaic has references since 1857. It is possible thanks to the invention and development of its base material: Portland cement.
Portland cement owes its name to its resemblance to Portland stone, typical of the Isle of Portland, in Dorsey, England.
Paste floors can be seen in colonial houses, hotels, buildings, museums and haciendas. They are a true cultural heritage, fruit of the European architectural and decorative influence, with an artisan elaboration that is preserved in some of the factories in Mexico, mostly in Merida, Yucatan. It has coherence since Yucatan was the place with the greatest Spanish influence.
Pasta floors can be of traditional pasta mosaic designs, such as those found in colonial homes in Mexico and much of Europe. Pasta floors have geometric, floral, modern or special designs for delivery and shipping, such as those found in the Empire State Building in New York or in some hotels in the Caribbean, ideal for both indoor and outdoor use. Colonial pasta tile flooring for exteriors is very versatile when combined in illuminated spaces due to its great variety of patterns and colors.
Development
The coincidence of this technique with the development of modernism made the designs more complex and artistic and the manufacturers counted fashion designers among their collaborators, such as Alexandre de Riquer, Domènech i Montaner, Josep Puig i Cadafalch, Josep Pascó and Enric Sagnier. Antoni Gaudà designed a single pasta floor, for the Casa Batlló, which was not finally placed in this house, but in the Casa Milá and is now used on the sidewalks of Paseo de Gracia in Barcelona. The drawings represented geometric, floral or vegetal forms. The simplest designs had a pattern that was repeated and combined piece by piece. Decorators generally composed the designs by simulating a carpet that occupied the entire room and required tiles that formed a perimeter border. It was also common for the composition of the final image to be obtained by combining 2, 4 or 6 different pieces, which complicated production and installation considerably.
Manufacturing process
Paste floor or hydraulic handmade paste floor is manufactured piece by piece. The artisan chooses the colors to be used and prepares a paste with water, mixing white marble powder, white cement, sand and pigments.
Once the mold is filled, it is placed under a hydraulic press that compresses it. It is then removed from the mold, left to dry and immersed in water for 24 hours. In order for the cement to harden perfectly, the tiles are sprayed with water and placed in a humid chamber for 28 days, which is the time it takes for the cement to harden due to the chemical process initiated by the water. This is where the name hydraulic tile floor comes from and not from the fact that hydraulic presses are used (originally the presses were manual).
This gives them great strength and solidity. In addition to its resistance, the colonial pasta floor is characterized by its versatility, its great variety of patterns and natural colors that make it suitable for both interiors and exteriors.
Architecture
It is important to note that, although its use has diminished, there are still many factories where the pasta floor is still made in the traditional way, both for use in the restoration of old colonial houses and to be placed in new properties.
Currently, it is used in floors, walls, pools, fountains, kitchen counters and it is even possible to create outdoor furniture, such as benches.

For installation it is necessary to follow the recommended instructions, as well as proper cleaning to ensure that the gloss and color is maintained. In both factories, orders can be customized in color combinations, designs and even the thickness of the lines and silhouettes, as they still continue to draw, scale and make unique molds (trepas) for each type of piece. Internationally very few factories follow this process, making Yucatecan mosaics a true cultural and decorative heritage of great quality.
